The Philadelphia Eagles are an important NFL team that has been a fixture in the league for decades. The team was originally known as the Frankford Yellowjackets before being purchased by Bert Bell and Bud Wray in 1933. In 1941, the Philadelphia franchise traded home cities with Pittsburgh and Alex Thompson became the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Odd 1943 Season

The 1943 season was very different due to what was going on in the world. World War II caused both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh franchise to be short on manpower. This necessitated that they would have to combine forces for the 1943 season. During this season, the team was referred to as the “Steagles” or “Phil-Pitt.”

League Success

The Philadelphia Eagles have a history of championship success in the NFL. They managed to be a dominant team in the 40s and won both the 1948 and 1949 championship games. The Eagles faltered a bit during the 50s, but they would manage to add another NFL championship title to their list of achievements in 1960. After defeating the Green Bay Packers for the championship in 1960, they came close to winning the NFL Eastern Conference championship in 1961, but ultimately fell short.

The Eagles would go through a long playoff drought after this period of time. It took 18 years for the Eagles to get back to the playoffs in 1978. The Eagles made it to the Super Bowl in 1980, but were ultimately defeated by the Oakland Raiders. The Eagles had success in the 80s and 90s as well, but they didn’t manage to get that Super Bowl win that they were craving.

It wouldn’t be until 2018 that the Eagles would finally win their first Super Bowl. Despite it taking a long time for the Eagles to win a proper Super Bowl, they have earned a reputation as one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. They have a dedicated fan base and many great players have played for the Eagles over the years. The Philadelphia Eagles will always be remembered as one of the premier teams in the league.
